  6. The main programs on this disk are:
  7.  
  8. AN.EXE      - the appointments calendar program,
  9. ALARM.COM   - the pop-up alarm clock,
  10. OUTSIDE.COM - an envelope addresser which takes addresses from
  11.               screen or file.
  12.  
  13. To get started using AN and ALARM first make a backup copy of this
  14. disk, then print the AN manual.  The manual has about 46 pages and
  15. can be printed in its entirety by entering
  16.   PRINTMAN AN.DOC
  17. To skip the first 4 pages and print the rest of the manual, type
  18.   PRINTMAN AN.DOC 4
  19. To view the manual on the screen use the /S option; e.g.
  20.   PRINTMAN/S AN.DOC 2            
  21.  
  22. The documentation for OUTSIDE is in the file OUTSIDE.DOC.  You can
  23. print or view this file in a similar way:

  27. Ample Notice installation is described in AN.DOC.  The basic idea 
  28. is to put the Ample Notice disk in the default drive, then type 
  29. ANSETUP.  If you are updating from versions 2.00 - 2.04 of Ample 
  30. Notice, see AN2TO3.DOC.  You can use PRINTMAN as with the other 
  31. DOC files described above.

  33. You are licensed to try out the Ample Notice period for a trial 
  34. period of 60 days.  After that, you must register if you want to 
  35. continue to use the software.  The file REGISTER.DOC contains a 
  36. registration form.
  37.  
  38. Granny's Old-Fashioned Software is a member organization of the 
  39. Association of Shareware Professionals and endorses its high 
  40. standards for Shareware distribution and support.  If you obtained 
  41. Ample Notice from a disk catalog or bulletin board, Granny's does 
  42. not receive a cent from the amount you paid.  We rely on your 
  43. registrations to keep going - please see details below.

  45. If you are a registered user of a previous version of Ample Notice 
  46. you may obtain the new printed manual for $5 (foreign: $7) from 
  47. Granny's.  Changes from version 2.04 include:
  48.  
  49.   The program is fully 'moused'.  While a mouse is not required, 
  50.   you can perform many operations more efficiently with a mouse.
  51.  
  52.   Pull-down menus are used, and command organization is improved.
  53.   (Quick keys still let you act immediately as an alternative.)
  54.  
  55.   43 and 50 row displays are now supported.
  56.  
  57.   The help system is much improved and includes examples of 
  58.   appointment syntax.
  59.  
  60.  
  61.   Categories are easier to use.  Ample Notice will remember which 
  62.   categories were selected last next time the program is run.
  63.  
  64.   Configuration file options are more intuitive.  Several new 
  65.   options have been added.
  66.  
  67.   The screen territory has been redistributed to give more space 
  68.   to appointments and less to the monthly calendar.
  69.   
  70. These changes and many more are described in the manual (printed 
  71. or disk version).

  75. MISCELLANEOUS COMMENTS. 
  76.  
  77. You may get an 'Out of Environment' message if you try to run 
  78. ANSETUP from a DOS box under Windows.  In this case, exit Windows 
  79. and install Ample Notice from the DOS prompt.  (Then you can run 
  80. Windows again with no problem.)
  81.  
  82. If you get an 'Out of Environment' message during AN installation 
  83. when you're just running DOS, you need to increase the size of 
  84. your DOS environment.  With DOS versions 4 and later, you can 
  85. include the line
  86.   SHELL=C:\COMMAND.COM /e:512 /p
  87. in your CONFIG.SYS file to increase your environment size to 512 
  88. bytes.  You'll have to boot your computer for the new setting to 
  89. take effect.

  91. If you plan to run Ample Notice under DESQview or Windows, please 
  92. see the file TECH.DOC for recommended installation.

  97. If you are unable to use the Help option in Ample Notice, modify 
  98. the CONFIG.CAL file to include the location of the help file 
  99. AN.HLP; e.g.

  102. If you have a laser printer (HP compatible) and enjoy REALLY 
  103. compressing your appointments, we have a font that will let you 
  104. print 25 characters per inch; with it, you can pack 176 lines by 
  105. 200 columns onto a page.  If you would like to obtain this font 
  106. and the directions for using it, please send your request with $3 
  107. to Granny.  Also, we can provide instructions for printing in 
  108. landscape mode upon request.

  112.     NEW FEATURES NOT DESCRIBED IN AN.DOC (OR PRINTED MANUAL)
  113.  
  114. If you want to see Ample Notice automatically the first time you 
  115. turn on your computer each day, but not after subsequent power-up 
  116. cycles, there is a simple way to accommodate this objective.  
  117. There is a short executable file called ANTODAY.COM on the Ample 
  118. Notice disk which can be used in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file to run 
  119. AN.EXE (and any other programs you like) only if today's date is 
  120. different from the date stored the last time that ANTODAY ran.  
  121. Just include ANTODAY followed by the letter of the drive on which 
  122. you want to save the date (normally C: if you have a hard drive).  
  123.  
  124. ANTODAY returns to the batch file that calls it the value 0 if the 
  125. date has not changed and 1 if it has.  Here is how you might 
  126. include it in AUTOEXEC.BAT:

  133. The line(s) between "if not..." and ":etc" are executed only if 
  134. the date has changed.  ANTODAY keeps the last access date in the
  135. file ANDATE, so don't remove this file.

  137. A new option for CONFIG.CAL has been added.  If you have too many 
  138. appointments in a month to print a single month in Month Style 
  139. printouts, you'll get the message
  140.   Appointment won't fit in column - use wider/longer column.
  141. If you haven't tried the 'Tiny' print style, select this style and 
  142. try again.  If you still can't fit a month onto a page, add the 
  143. line
  144.   OneLine
  145. to CONFIG.CAL and run AN again.  The new OneLine option causes 
  146. only the first lines of appointments to be printed in Month 
  147. printouts (but leaves List printouts as before).

  236. program.  The program includes a print spooler which can be set to 
  237. any length from 1 - 400K characters.  The spooler has been 
  238. customized to work with LQ's long graphics sequences very 
  239. efficiently (using about 1/40 the space required by a conventional 
  240. spooler); you can continue using your computer for other tasks 
  241. while documents print in the background.
